Where AWS SES wins

IAM credential scoping for agent identities. AWS IAM policies restrict agent credentials to specific SES API actions (
ses:SendEmail,ses:SendRawEmail), specific sender identity ARNs, and condition keys such asses:FromAddressandses:Recipients. This is action-level, resource-level, and condition-level scoping in one policy. It is the most granular minimal-privilege credential model for email-sending agents. SendGrid custom API keys scope to specific endpoints. They cover the operation dimension but cannot restrict to specific sender domains or apply resource-level conditions. For zero-trust architectures, IAM is in a different class. -
Data residency and compliance. AWS SES runs within a specific AWS region. All email data stays in that region unless explicitly routed elsewhere. SES participates in AWS's SOC 2, HIPAA BAA, and FedRAMP programs. For agent pipelines handling regulated data, SES's AWS compliance boundary covers requirements SendGrid cannot. SendGrid is cloud-hosted with no self-hosting. It has a narrower compliance certification scope.
Where SendGrid wins

Direct HTTP webhook delivery without infrastructure. SendGrid's Event Webhook posts events directly to an HTTPS endpoint with optional HMAC-SHA256 signature verification. AWS SES publishes delivery events to SNS topics. Receiving those events requires configuring an SNS HTTP subscription, Lambda function, or SQS queue. SNS adds infrastructure that must be provisioned and maintained. For agent pipelines not already in AWS, this is a meaningful setup cost.

Inbound email without infrastructure. SendGrid's Inbound Parse Webhook receives incoming email on a configured MX domain and POSTs structured JSON to an endpoint. It includes from, to, subject, text, HTML, and attachments. AWS SES Receipt Rules route inbound email to S3, Lambda, SNS, or WorkMail. Receiving structured content requires reading from S3 or parsing inside Lambda. Neither path delivers pre-parsed JSON to an HTTP endpoint like SendGrid does.
The agentic difference
Neither provider ships an MCP server. Both require building a custom adapter before an agent can invoke email operations as tool calls. The integration burden is equal on this dimension.
SendGrid's simpler HTTP webhooks and Inbound Parse reduce infrastructure provisioning. For standalone agent deployments not operating in AWS, SendGrid's direct HTTP delivery and zero-infrastructure inbound parsing provide lower starting complexity.
AWS SES's SNS-based event delivery and Receipt Rules add provisioning to both outbound and inbound event handling. That infrastructure lives inside AWS's compliance boundary. For agent pipelines running in AWS or needing HIPAA or FedRAMP requirements, SES plus IAM is the natural fit. IAM credential scoping per sender identity is unavailable elsewhere. The compliance posture is part of the AWS account.

Pick AWS SES when the agent pipeline runs in AWS and requires IAM-level credential scoping per sender identity. Pick AWS SES when the workload must satisfy HIPAA, SOC 2, or FedRAMP requirements within the AWS compliance boundary.

Pick SendGrid when the agent deployment is standalone. Pick SendGrid when webhook events should arrive via direct HTTP without SNS infrastructure. Pick SendGrid when inbound email should be parsed without managing S3 or Lambda. Pick SendGrid when compliance requirements do not mandate AWS.
