Milvus vs Pinecone
Supported Not supported Unverified
Milvus and Pinecone both target large-scale vector workloads but with very different deployment models. Milvus is open-source with self-host, BYOC, and managed Zilliz Cloud; Pinecone is cloud-only with the most polished serverless experience in the category.
Where Milvus wins
-
Open-source with self-host and BYOC. Apache 2.0 with deployment on your own infrastructure. Pinecone has no self-host or BYOC SKU at any tier.
-
Widest selection of ANN index types. HNSW, IVF_FLAT, IVF_PQ, DiskANN, SCANN, GPU-CAGRA. Pinecone manages indexes for you with less direct control.
-
Multi-vector fields and pluggable rerankers in one query. Native hybrid retrieval across multiple dense/sparse fields with RRF or weighted fusion.
Where Pinecone wins
-
Mature serverless billing and zero-ops experience. Pinecone Serverless was first to separate storage from compute at scale. Zilliz serverless is improving but younger.
-
Pinecone Assistant ships hosted RAG. Upload files, get retrieval back. Milvus leaves chunking and assistant orchestration to you.
-
First-party MCP server. Pinecone ships an official MCP server via Assistant. Milvus does not yet have a first-party MCP server.
The agentic difference
For agents in regulated industries or air-gapped deployments, Milvus's self-host story is decisive — Pinecone cannot run inside a VPC. For consumer agents with bursty, long-tail per-user vector workloads, Pinecone's serverless billing and integrated Assistant collapse the operational surface. Index choice matters when latency targets are tight and you want to tune the recall/cost tradeoff yourself.
When to pick which
-
Pick Milvus when you need self-host, BYOC, index choice beyond HNSW, or open-source guarantees.
-
Pick Pinecone when you want zero-ops managed RAG with predictable serverless billing and a first-party MCP server.
