Strapi and WordPress are both open-source and self-hosted. Strapi was designed as headless, WordPress added REST to publishing. Strapi wins on API depth, webhooks, and AI/MCP. WordPress is only relevant if you already run it.

Where Strapi wins

REST and GraphQL APIs as first-class output. Strapi auto-generates REST and GraphQL APIs from content types. REST supports relational population, sorting, filtering, pagination, and locale. GraphQL is an official plugin with configurable depth limits. WordPress REST is at /wp-json/wp/v2/ for core types only. GraphQL requires a third-party plugin.

Outbound webhooks for event-driven integration. Strapi sends outbound HTTP webhooks on nine event types: entry lifecycle (create, update, delete, publish, unpublish), media, workflow, and release. You can trigger external pipelines, automation platforms, and downstream systems without custom code. WordPress has no outgoing webhooks in core. Its hook system is server-side PHP only. External webhooks require a plugin with no retry guarantee.

Scoped API tokens with per-content-type permissions. Strapi offers three token types: read-only, full-access, and custom. Custom tokens let you set permissions per content type and operation via the admin UI. Tokens support configurable durations and revocation. WordPress Application Passwords are tied to a full user account with no post-type or operation restriction. No read-only or content-scoped tokens in WordPress core.

Where WordPress wins

  • Existing WordPress installation. For projects already running WordPress, the headless layer is additive. Existing content, media, authors, and workflows stay in place. The REST API exposes content to agents without rebuilding the model. This cost benefit doesn't apply to new projects.

The agentic difference

Neither Strapi nor WordPress ships a documented MCP server in core. Strapi documents "Strapi AI" for content modeling and translations but no MCP endpoint or AI operation API. WordPress MCP support comes from community plugins only.

Strapi's outbound webhooks, GraphQL, and scoped tokens give better agent integration than WordPress. Agent pipelines can receive content events via webhooks, query structured content through GraphQL, and authenticate with minimal-permission tokens. WordPress requires a plugin for each of those capabilities with no guaranteed retry logic or token scoping.

When to pick which

  • Pick Strapi for new headless projects where the API layer, content modeling, and token security matter. Auto-generated REST and GraphQL, outbound webhooks, and scoped tokens provide integration surface WordPress doesn't. Also pick Strapi when your team works in Node.js and wants content model and API config as code.

  • Pick WordPress when you already have a WordPress installation and the headless layer is additive. Existing content, media, authors, and workflows stay in place.

  • Do not pick WordPress as a new headless CMS for agent use cases. No native outgoing webhooks, no GraphQL in core, and no content-scoped credentials. You would rebuild each integration layer outside the platform. Strapi addresses all three natively.
